The main problem is that far too many variables were adjusted:
Was it the change in macronutrients, meal timing, or psychological reward value of the food?
My guess is that the cake group learned that providing they did stay in calorie deficit, they could eat some "bad foods" and still lose weight, so they kept on the diet. Perhaps the lack of reward in the cakeless group meant they totally fell off the wagon after the 16 weeks of "deprivation".
Personally I eat a predominantly Paleo/Weston Price influenced diet, and feel that though it may not hinder, and may even help weight loss, eating cake for breakfast everyday may not be the best strategy for long term health!
That said, I think there could be more interesting research done based on these findings.
First up, love the show, keep spreading the word!
Just wanted to comment on the study you mentioned re the chocolate cake for breakfast - Perhaps in this case you did get a bit carried away without all the facts!
The first part of the study was a 16 week diet.
Both groups ate the same calories each day, but one group had a low calorie + LOW CARB breakfast, the other had a high calorie + HIGH CARB + HIGH PROTEIN breakfast, which included a "treat" such as chocolate or cake.
Over the 16 weeks, both groups lost THE SAME AMOUNT OF WEIGHT.
Where things get interesting is that the scientists followed up the participants 16 weeks AFTER the diet intervention had finished.
The group on the low calorie low carb breakfast without cake had GAINED BACK the weight.
The high calorie, high carb, high protein + cake group had CONTINUED TO LOSE weight.
