Health, Strength And Vitality... The New Status Symbol
Since I’ve moved to Phoenix its become painfully apparent that my car is a junk box. While its reliable, its pretty old and looks very run down. Years of neglect, spilled children’s drinks and food, coffee splashes and the tell tale signs of aesthetic disrepair have become a bit embarrassing. You see in this hot sunny climate it appears that my 1994 Volvo 940 is the oldest most run-down automobile on the road!
My brother-in-law just traded in his 5 year old BMW for a new one. My two nieces also drive very new BMW’s and my sister drives a Mercedes. And then there’s my Volvo. “You really need to think about getting a new car” I hear politely. I know I do but my life is not in a place where I can consider this right now.
This morning I drove to my favorite coffee shop. As I pulled into the parking lot I was surrounded by a new Lexus, Range Rover, two BMW’s and an Infinity. I was a bit intimidated as I pulled up thinking that the people were looking out the window at me pulling up in my clunker with the interior roof clothe hanging in the rear windshield.
As I walked into the place I noticed that the people already inside, who were obviously the owners of some of those cars in the parking lot, we all out of shape. I’m talking a couple of them were just plain fatso’s! At 51 years of age I look better than many men my age. I’m not bragging, just an observation. As I walked into the coffee shop my shame about the car I’m driving melted away and all of a sudden I felt proud.
I’m a lean 225 pounds right now and clearly muscular. I have separation between my shoulders and traps, bi’s and tri’s and front delts and pecs that are visible even through my shirt. My shoulders are approximately fifty eight inches wide and my lats follow a progressive taper down to my thirty six inch waist. I’m tan, have all my hair and at six feet two inches tall…. I’m a walking Lexus, BMW or Infinity!
I started thinking about it. We’re so hung up on material possessions. Our success is directly related to our self esteem and success is measured by the number of things we acquire. The one thing nature gave us, that we came into the world with, that’s NOT an acquisition… is our bodies. Yet so many people place value on external things like big homes, expensive cars and bling.
I say let muscle be the new bling. Let the outward appearance of strength and vigor be the new car status. Let the lack of NEEDING health-care but instead the perpetual state of good health, replace the bigger home. Let your body be the new status symbol. When someone asks what kind of car you drive have the balls to say “is that really important when you look like I do?”
Let strength, health and vitality be the new status symbol in your life. Let’s show people they have the wrong priorities when they abandon the one thing that they truly own and are responsible for…. Their own body.
