Michael Brooks' Reversing Hashimoto's Disease Diet

Here are more details on the approach I took to putting my autoimmune disease in remission.
I had Hashimotos but I think this diet approach would be effective for any autoimmune condition.
I basically started with a Paleo style template I did add some foods that the original Paleo plan did not recommend such as dairy, buckwheat and white rice but it just made it a lot easier transition for me.

Then after about 6 months when I was starting to feel a lot better but still not looking , feeling or performing at 100%. I decided it was time to ratchet the diet down a little more and so I adopted a more Paleo Autoimmune Diet ( PAD) approach by eliminating the most common foods that can trigger an inflammatory response in folks with a autoimmune disorders . Some people may never have to take the PAD approach as I did and the standard Paleo diet maybe all you need but like I said I still felt less then 100%.

BTW I also quit coffee at this point yikes this was tough ! but you have to at some point try to quit or atleast limit your intake of stimulants if you are suffering from low thyroid function the Thyroid and the Adrenals are directly linked .
Then after about 6 months on the PAD I felt my gut was in good shape so I slowly began to add back some of the foods I had eliminated while on the PAD such as whey protein, eggs , nuts and seeds I added them back in one at a time to be sure I didn’t react to them which is where I am at today.

This is what my typical Paleo diet looked like when I started:
Breakfast: 4 eggs, bacon, Buckwheat grits, whey Protein drink w/greens, cup of coffee
Post Workout Snack: Nuts, berries, piece of chicken
Lunch: two grass fed ground beef patty’s, Salad , sweet potatoes, piece of dark 85% chocolate
Snack: whey protein shake
Dinner: Fish, white rice, broccoli
What is the Paleo Diet ? : it’s fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, eggs, vegetables, fruit, fungi, roots, and nuts, and excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, potatoes, refined salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.

This is what my typical diet looked like when I started the Paleo Autoimmune diet ( PAD) approach:
Breakfast: 2 x ground beef patty, Fried Plantains in coconut oil, Kale shake and a cup of ginseng tea
Post workout Snack: berries and a piece of chicken
Lunch: two grass fed ground beef patty’s, Salad , piece of dark 85% chocolate
Snack: Rice protein shake
Dinner: Fish, white rice, broccoli
Paleo Diet Autoimmune protocol ( PAIP) “ DO NOT EAT LIST”
• Eggs
• Tomatoes & eggplants
• Peppers including bell peppers and hot peppers
• Spices such as curries, paprika, and chili powder.
• Nuts and seeds

This is what my typical Paleo diet looks like now :
Breakfast: 4 egg yolks, bacon, Buckwheat grits, protein shake w/greens , cup of decaf coffee
Post workout Snack: Nuts , berries , piece of chicken
Lunch: two grass fed ground beef patty’s, Salad , sweet potatoes, piece of dark 85% chocolate
Snack: Whey protein shake ( whey protein, fruit, coconut oil)
Dinner: Fish, white rice, broccoli

Key Points:
• Be patient! it probably took years of digging your way into an autoimmune condition and so it may take a little while to dig your way out.
• GLUTEN IS NON-NEGOTIABLE!!!! you have to be completely off gluten even a very small gluten exposure can have long lasting effects sometimes even days for example even if you have just one slice of bread a week it could be enough to keep you in a perpetual state of inflammation . The goal here is to give the gut a chance to heal remember 80% of your immune system is in the gut!
• The hypo Thyroidism is directly linked to low Adrenal function so try to manage your stress I practice Tai Chi/Qi Gong , don’t over train and limit or completely cut out any stimulants.
• Meds and hormones can be very helpful but don’t rely on them get the diet and lifestyle straightened out first and then you may find you don’t need any or atleast you will find that the effective dose is much less (the poison is in the dose) .
• Try to eat Organic , grass fed free range ( you are what you eat eats!)
• add a lot of bones to any soups or stews the gelatin in bone broth protects and heals the mucosal lining of the digestive tract.
• Try to find out what is your kryptonite ! find the food that you are intolerant to and get them out of your diet!
